Consider the needs of the workplace. When you provide your example, explain the reasons behind your course of action. If you tried to fix the mistake before bringing it to the attention of your superiors, explain why. In this scenario, a good reason would be to not distract your supervisors from important matters they were dealing with, and it was simpler and less exhaustive of the company's resources for you to fix it yourself. If you brought the mistake to their attention, explain that it would've cost the workplace more to have you fix it, whereas the issue could be solved by a superior in a matter of minutes.

You might not tell the interviewer that you neglected to take responsibility for your mistake, your answer could send that message. Choose your reasons and words wisely. How you reacted should be in the best interest of the company. Owning your mistake shows character and integrity.

"I overheard our team leaders discussing the need for a new CSM software. I'd been exploring it recently and thought I had the solution. I downloaded the software to test it and then suggest it to our leaders, wanting to help. Unfortunately, I accidentally downloaded a virus that affected our IT department. Before it got too out of control, I explained what happened right away to my supervisor. Luckily, they were able to contain the virus, and no damage was done."

"I arrived at work early before anyone else was there. When I was in the hall, I tripped, and while reaching up to grab something to save myself from the fall, I accidentally grabbed the fire alarm. Several others arrived just then, and it created quite the panic. Knowing that the fire department could charge us for false fire alarms, I hurriedly called them and explained it was a false alarm. When I went back out to the parking lot, I found my supervisor on the phone, calling the fire department out again. I hurriedly explained what had happened. They tried to cancel a second time, but the fire truck was already pulling up. We got charged for the false alarm. I offered to pay for it, but my boss refused. Accidents happen, they said."
